Exploring the Chinese script system through a space between art and information.

Typography. Information design. Poster Design.

Comprehending something as vast and complex as the Chinese script is a task that can seem daunting and overwhelming. I had the opportunity to study the language for a few years and was immediately fascinated by the inner workings of this script, which is so different from the Latin alphabet most of us grew up with.

As a visual learner - and designer - I arranged all the parts of a Chinese character (these are called »radicals«) in a way that would help me, and hopefully others, better understand how this script works.

To do this, I sorted the radicals by the number of strokes they had and grouped them into the shapes of Western numerals. The result is an aesthetically pleasing poster, accompanied by a reference sheet for translation and pronunciation.

Organizing radicals

Radicals are the smallest parts of a Chinese character. They are usually combined to form a character, and can be an indicator of meaning or pronunciation.
